Scripps sets an example

Below is an email sent out by Scripps College President Lori Bettison-Varga:

Date: December 1, 2011
To: Scripps College Staff, Faculty and Students
From: President Lori Bettison-Varga

Yesterday, seven Scripps College employees received calls from the College’s Human Resources department asking them to complete a new I-9 form. The I-9 form is a document that under Federal law all employers are required to complete with respect to all employees at the time of hire, verifying identity and right to work in the United States. As soon as the calls came to the attention of the President’s Office, they were halted. Scripps College has always had a policy and practice of collecting appropriate documents for all employees at the time of hire. The calls were made by the department because the employees’ I-9 information was not readily available in on-campus files. It is my belief that the I-9 forms not stored on campus are at CUC in deep storage where personnel records from 1986 to 1998 are archived. There is no reason for any further questions or actions to be pursued.
